Significance of output:

In this paper we demonstrate compression of ultrafast laser pulses in short lengths of gas-filled capillary, from 50fs to 7fs in a distance of only 5cm, rather than the 1m distances usually used. The ability to compress pulses efficiently & over short distances will change the design of future ultrafast pulse sources, and of new coherent soft X-ray sources. The result represents experimental confirmation of a sophisticated model of nonlinear ultrafast laser pulse propagation in multimode gas-filled waveguides. It will open up a new experimental area for both pulse compression and high harmonic generation in gas-filled waveguides.
