Significance of output:

The paper reports a new concept of a coherent optical source where the emission wavelength is not prescribed by the properties of natural molecular media, but could be engineered using the nanotechnology toolkit. The lasing spaser will allow a high level of integration in nanophotonic devices. The paper had a profound impact on the field of metamaterials (follow-up in Germany, USA, China, Taiwan). It was one of the cornerstone results leading to a £6M EPSRC Programme in Photonic Metamaterials (EP/G060363/1), 2 DSTL grants (£290k), US ONR Research grant ($300k) and MURI programme, and a £160k collaboration with Taiwan (EPSRC, EP/F012810/1).
