Significance of output:

This collaboration with partners in Italy and Germany showed, for the first time, how infra-red porosimetry can be exploited to monitor coating integrity during the operation of gas turbines. The results represent a new method for non-destructive testing of plasma sprayed coatings, which offer the benefit of significant lifetime extensions in applications ranges from electric power generation in land-based gas turbines to aircraft jet engines. The findings are currently being used within the FP7 H2-IGCC programme by Ricerca sul Sistema Energetico, Italy (federico.cernuschi@rse-web.it).
