Significance of output:

This paper proposes a novel lattice allowing air-guidance in hollow core photonic bandgap fibres (PBGFs) and demonstrates that this supports the widest possible bandgap. The result is significant for telecommunications, where the capacity of conventional fibres is approaching fundamental limits and PBGFs could ultimately offer a significant capacity increase. Since information capacity scales only logarithmically with signal-to-noise-ratio but linearly with fibre bandwidth, the structure identified here can allow a >50% capacity enhancement over prior art. The result was instrumental in the creation of a European consortium which was awarded a 11.8 Million Euros grant (ModeGap, 258033).
