Significance of output:

The first demonstration of erasable gratings in silicon. A new approach to fabrication of Bragg gratings based on detailed design and experimental evaluation. Funded by Intel Corporation (USA) and IeMRC (UK) (£130k - Intel contact Dr Richard Jones)., A joint patent was filed between the university/Intel. This work led directly to a new EPSRC £6M grant (awarded October 2013) with a world leading wafer prober manufacturer (Wentworth Laboratories Inc.) as a project partner (Wentworth contact Jeremy Hope). The work facilitates opportunities for wafer scale testing of silicon photonics (essential for mass market photonics) by introducing erasable couplers within optical circuits.
