Arithmetic and Biologically-Inspired Computing Using Phase-Change Materials
First ever experimental proof-of-principle of phase-change based arithmetic processor and optical memristor (memflector). Carried out as part of EPSRC (EP/F015046/1) research into optical and electrical switching in phase-change alloys, in collaboration with STMicroelectronics (Italy), Plasmon Data Systems Ltd and RWTH-Aachen. Resulted in numerous invited papers at prestigious international conferences (e.g. Nature Conf on Frontiers in Electronics, 2012; MRS Sprint Meeting, San Francisco, 2012), follow-on research funding (NSF-EPSRC grant with University of Pennsylvania, EP/J018783/1) and high-profile publicity (e.g. articles in New Scientist (9/7/2011), Financial Times (2/7/2011), The Economist (1/9/2012)). Highlighted in special 'Phase-change perspectives' article in Science (336, 1515, 2012).
