Internal stresses in steel plate generated by shape memory alloy inserts
The work in this paper formed part of an EU-funded PRO-STONE project (FP6-2003-SME-2, €3M total cost). Its aim was to improve efficiency in the European stone-cutting industry by advanced tool development utilising embedded shape-memory alloy (SMA) actuators. The work challenges current thinking both in terms of the novelty of the application of SMA in lifetime extension of cutting tools and in the complexity of in-situ experimental assessment of internal strain. Demonstrator cutting components were created and evaluated by the industrial partners (D’Appolonia, Margherita Cioffi, margherita.cioffi@dappolonia.it) using the learning from this paper and have shown improvements in performance. cordis.europa.eu/result/brief/rcn/9499_en.html
