<26> Originality: The paper stems from a collaboration between the Home Office, UK, the University Poitier, France, and our team. It presents a subjective investigation that employed specialist observers to produce official recommendations to Transport for London (TfL) for setting acceptable compression levels of CCTV footage of people boarded on London buses.

Significance: The paper gained the best research student award at the IS&T/SPIE Electronic Imaging 2013 conference. The recommendations are currently implemented by London’s Transport for London (contact: David Fell, TfL, Technical Services Group).

Rigour: Statistical methods were implemented to convert the qualitative results to quantitative data.
