Additional information

<20> Published in a special issue (co-edited by Waller), this paper describes the first-time interactive implementation of automatic pun generation. Waller instigated the extension of the original JAPE software by Ritchie (Aberdeen), managing the interface design for nonspeaking children with Pain (Edinburgh). An EPSRC grant (GR/S15419/01, £181k) developed the STANDUP software which has been downloaded more than 1,000 times since 2007. This work laid the foundation for the installation of the Joking Computer in the Glasgow & Aberdeen Science Centres (EP/G020280/1) with an annual footfall of 80,000. STANDUP has featured in IEEE Intelligent Systems and Jimmy Carr’s book “The Naked Jape”.
