The Life of A Long Distance Writer. The Biography of Alan Sillitoe.
This 170,000 word authorised biography involved, over three years, the scrutiny of previously unpublished archive material in Emory and Indiana Universities, the use of private diaries, manuscripts and correspondence provided by Sillitoe himself, correspondence and other material held by friends, relatives and fellow writers, and interviews with Sillitoe and many others in the US, Europe and Israel. It offers a new perspective on British society, culture and literature from the 1940s onwards and shows how Sillitoe's work reflects his attitudes towards class and politics, and his involvement with Judaism and with human rights issues in the Soviet bloc.
