Thermophilic biological nitrogen removal in industrial wastewater treatment
This is the first published work indicating that biological treatment of certain industrial wastewater constituents is possible at high temperatures within a full scale wastewater treatment plant. The work was carried out using real microbial mixture from wastewater treatment plants, and identification of microbial groups was carried out, along with their bulk behaviour assessment, using a dynamic modelling approach. The work is important in understanding the underlying biological mechanisms and extending the feasible optimisation domain, thus facilitating the adaptation and transformation of wastewater treatment practices and water pollution control infrastructure at high temperatures.
