Catalytic Clothing and Tactility Factory: Crafted Collaborative Connections

This output is a book contribution and journal article examining collaborative working methods in textile design. The journal article drew together ideas from numerous presentations on Belford’s collaborative practice, consolidating and extending elements of papers presented at The Textile Institute Centenary Conference, ‘Textiles a Global Vision’ (Nov 2010) and the Textile Society Research Symposium (March 2011), ‘The Textile Designer as Added Value’. Belford was subsequently selected to contribute a chapter to ‘Collaboration Through Craft’ edited by Ravetz, Felcey and Kettle (Bloomsbury Publishing 2013). Belford’s first person account discussed two collaborative projects where her specialist printed textile knowledge engaged with, informed and developed new ideas between science, fashion and architecture. The case studies examined how cross-disciplinary collaboration enables innovative and effective research. The case studies - Catalytic Clothing and Tactility Factory, expose the working processes of collaboration, outlining the stages of negotiation and the dynamics arising from diverse disciplinary methods. The book chapter is ultimately a road map for creative interaction with science and gives insight into the hidden aspects of collaborative research that would not normally be evident in published outcomes.
