This paper scrutinises a widely used technique for reservoir planning in the literature, leading to a quantitative exposure of its limitations. It is the first to test the efficacy of the technique by establishing that its use can produce large errors in estimates of reservoir size with consequences for both the cost and performance of associated engineering infrastructures.
