Additional information

<11>The paper's significance was giving GADTs (the core theory of data types in the state of the art functional programming language Haskell) a firm denotational footing - previously GADTs were simply a Haskell specific technique. This algebraic presentation of GADTs provided new insights and tools for the study of GADTs and consequently the paper has had a major influence on the field and become part of the core literature on GADTs (as evidenced by wide use and/or citation by other researchers). Further evidence of significance is its publication at POPL - the most prestigious conference for research into programming languages.
