<33>This study contributes a classification schema that can be used to classify user created comments left on YouTube. The schema allows researchers and practitioners to identify types or uses of comments and separate them for analysis. These analyses can be qualitative, to investigate language use, or quantitative, as in areas such as online advertising and sentiment analysis.

In addition, the ability to classify comment types is of importance in computer-mediated communication studies, as it allows the often hidden discourses that take place there that can include racism, sexism, or other offensive behaviour, to be adequately measured and understood.
