A DNS study on the stabilization mechanism of a turbulent lifted ethylene jet flame in highly-heated coflow
Significance of output:
Diesel engine pollutant production is influenced strongly by the details of the flame behaviour close to the fuel injector: these details have been revealed in this study through a world record breaking computer simulation. Requiring concurrent solution of 35 billion ordinary differential equations, this simulation also breaks new ground in the field of scientific computing. Processing of the vast data has stimulated progress in in-situ visualisation of large data leading to prize for scientific visualisation (http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/08/visualizations/5/). The US National Center for Computational Sciences awarded an unprecedented 50 million computer hours for continuation of this work in 2010.
