Mould Making for Glass
'Mould making for Glass', unrivalled in clarity, accuracy and detail, explores contemporary casting and kiln forming glass through a series of carefully researched artist case studies and example scenarios. It is the first book to be written with particular focus on refractory mould making materials and methods and is therefore unique in its perspective. Thwaites, sole author, was commissioned by A & C Black as a result of her CDRom entitled 'Mixing with the Best' (2001). Thwaites, an internationally recognised authority on kiln cast glass, has enhanced knowledge and understanding of current practice.
The book illustrates her systematic and meticulous methodological investigation into refractory mould making, including in-depth study and documentation of material ingredients, proportions and recipes and the effects on various types of glass during a range of firing cycles.
Detailed, accurate and rigorous intellectual investigation was applied to the original research into contemporary practice in the writing and illustrating of the book.
A high level of integrity, engagement and precision was involved in the Thwaites curating and staging of an exhibition to launch the book to broad audience (general, academic, museums and collectors) via the popular and internationally recognised Gallery at LGW. 'MELT' showed works from all eighteen artists featured in the book and brought together a unique group of works in kiln formed glass from a range of emerging and internationally significant practitioners from UK, Czech Republic and Hungary to enhance visitor understanding of contemporary methods of making and highlight potential for further development in the cross over between traditional and digital technologies in glass. The success of this exhibition led the gallery to host another event a year later, at which Thwaites also exhibited (FORM)
Thwaites was subsequently invited to give a paper and practical demonstration at the biannual AusGlass conference in April 2013.
