Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital - museum exhibition
Out of Hand: materialising the post-digital is billed as the first major museum exhibition exploring the explosion in trans disciplinary practice enabled by digital design and manufacturing technologies. The exhibition features some 80 international artists leading in this field: the selection of Holy Ghost for this event is therefore highly significant. Holy Ghost demonstrates that it is possible to ‘drive’ parametric cad models with computer scripts and to use this computational design approach to generate unique variants from a virtual meta design in real time. The chairs demonstrate that it is possible to introduce elements of random variance into ‘mainstream’ product design while maintaining a ‘brand’ identity. It this way added valued can be designed into a product through individualisation and personalisation. Other practitioners are employing computer scripts to generate design variants but the author was among the first and the inclusion of Holy Ghost this exhibition illustrates the significance of the work. Other work in the area does not place the same emphasis on maintaining a coherent ‘brand’ design identity across the iterations generated: an important factor in design as opposed to art/craft applications.
