34 - Art and Design: History, Practice and Theory
De Montfort University
The Camera as Historian Amateur Photographers and Historical Imagination, 1885-1918
The research for this output took 9 years. It was exceptionally complex both conceptually and archivally - the data set was drawn from 17 scattered and often unrecognised and uncatalogued archives. A much larger number (across a range of geographical locations) was consulted and discarded. The research pieced together complex and scattered fragments across a huge range of contemporary printed sources.
The analysis demanded an unusually extensive range of interdisciplinary skills in order to develop a radically new conceptualisation of the basis and significance of the data, constituting a new analytical methodology and a significant new dataset in photographic history.
