This publication concerns the first fully developed functioning prototype operating surgical robot for single port surgery. It offers significant cost and size advantages over current commercial systems. The research was carried out by a large consortium involved in the €8.1M EU FP7 ‘ARAKNES’ Integrating project, coordinated by Prof Cuschieri and Prof Dario and involving 6 academic partners and 5 companies producing medical equipment. In addition to three patents covering the SPRINT robot itself, a further 3 have been awarded for spin off technologies and techniques.
