Of the five criteria that apply to justify a double-weighted research output, four are met by this 2009 book (350 pp). The author undertakes throughout a two-pronged remapping, one geopolitical and one institutional, that peers have recognized as a complex, conversation-changing thesis on postwar art cinema. The material covered is extensive, focusing on two national cinema traditions over a period spanning three decades (one chapter alone takes as its research sample 750 films). The book draws on extensive primary sources (films, pressbooks, trade journals) from a number of American and British archives, researched during several trips over several years.
