Additional information

The approach has been extended to silicon micro-pipettes suitable for large-scale manufacture: Campo et al "High-Throughput Ion-Beam Modified Micro-nozzles to Probe Live Cells ", MRS-Fall 2013 paper F3.04. Here toxic effects from micro-processing appear not to cause deleterious effects in mouse embryonic development. Biggers (a pioneer of embryo biology) commented that “ Focus ion-beam milling has been applied to reshape and sharpen the pipette tip (Campo et al., 2010). With further development of advanced technologies, it may be possible to produce high-quality injection pipettes in large quantities….” ( J. Anim. Sci.; 90(11):3739-42,2012 ).
