Additional information

This paper provides important information on parameters, gathered through intensive studies, required for treating and degrading hair in composters with the ultimate aim of producing a source of nitrogen to be used in products such as fertilisers. The research was the culmination of SITA funding leading towards the development of protocols for the sustainable management of tannery hair waste. The paper was presented at national and international conferences, cited, viewed 41 and downloaded 21 times, in the past 4 months (ResearchGate) suggesting worldwide interest in the outcomes of the research. The paper has been translated to Portuguese and published in a technical trade magazine- Revista do Cuoro (Brazil). Further to this, other research projects now include treating and degrading leather waste for composting as a sustainable waste management strategy.
