Bußmann, R. Der Kult für die Königsmutter Anchenes-Merire I. im Tempel des Chontamenti. Zwei unpublizierte Türstürze der 6. Dynastie aus Abydos
The article presents two unpublished objects and proposes an alternative explanation of their historical context. Previous authors have interpreted the statue cult in provincial temples for individuals other than the king as a reflection of a beginning “democratization” of royal prerogatives. It is argued here, however, that kings instigated these statue cults for their own purpose. It is shown that sixth queens originate from provincial centres and argued that kings married daughters of local elites and set up statue cults in their home temples in order to establish a relationship of loyalty to emerging powerful families in provincial Egypt.
