Additional information

This paper addresses a debate amongst advocates of different approaches to academic writing research, which was the focus of a seminar the author organised with invited speakers representing academic literacies, identities, systemic functional linguistic (SFL) and corpus approaches. There followed a seminar at the Open University to which the invited author proposed a systemic perspective to contrast academic literacies approaches, this paper being included in the resulting special issue. The paper has been cited for both its distinctive ethnographic approach to SFL (Coffin and Donohue 2012), and as an SFL rather than an alternative (Swalesean) approach to genre (Tribble, Wingait and Maingay 2012).
