Additional information

This book was the main output of a three-year research project, ‘John Ruskin, Cultural Travel, and Popular Access’, funded by the AHRC, for which Hanley was the Principal Investigator and Walton one of two Co-Investigators. Of the eight chapters, the “Introduction: The Joy of Travel” and the Conclusion were jointly written. The first three chapters on the cultural history and aesthetics of European travel (“The Ruskin Moment”; “Sightseeing with Ruskin”; “The Interpretation of Places” pp. 24-132) were written by Hanley, the last three on its uses for popular education and institutionalisation were written by Walton.
