A metadata approach for clinical data management in translational genomics studies in breast cancer
<28>
In the UK-Canada METABRIC (Molecular Taxonomy of Breast Cancer) project, model-driven tools and semantic web technology were used to annotate and standardise clinical records linked to 4000 tissue samples from five different hospitals. The resulting meta-analysis, which led to a Nature publication, would have been impractical without the degree of automation that the new technology afforded. This is a highly-accessed article (more than 3000 accesses on BioMed Central). The technology has been carried forward to the main UK Contribution for the International Cancer Genome Consortium, in Oesophageal Cancer, where Davies' team are responsible for the computer science.
