English abstract
The article proposes a new perspective in which to view the British hand-overs of Cossacks in 1945. In prevalent interpretations the Cossacks are seen as collective victims, whereas this article outlines firstly, the extent of their participation in the war on the Allied side and concludes that the deportations of Slovenes and Cossack actions in Croatia should be seen as two sides of the same coin. Secondly, the article places the establishment of a Cossack victim narrative in the context of post-war Austrian historiography. In conclusion, the article critically examines the work of the Austrian historian, Stefan Karner.
