English abstract

This article is based mostly on primary sources: the French anarchist press; interviews and correspondence with veterans; autobiographies; the CNT-FAI archives and private correspondence (International Institute for Social History, Amsterdam); police reports (National Archives, Paris). It examines the historiographical problems related to these sources and generally to collective biography in labour history. The analysis of the database of 327 individuals includes a breakdown according to which CNT-FAI column they belonged to, or according to whether they fulfilled support roles in ‘French Sections’ in Barcelona and Puigcerda; it also provides analysis according to occupation and social background, age, gender and geography.
