Additional information

This paper presents the first use of dynamic contact vibration theory to study the role of the violin bridge, thus illuminating the mystery of the so-called “bridge hill”. It shows for the first time that the dynamic contact stiffness significantly impacts the bridge’s mobility. A model was developed to advance understanding of the mechanisms of many unclear phenomena, for example, the statistical region ambiguity in the violin’s dynamic response. This international contribution was a response to a call for special papers on science in cultural heritage. The results provide generic guidance for violin makers to adjust and improve violin sound quality.
