Additional information

The significance of the research lies in the proposed semantic approach to activity characterization, augmented with artificial intelligence capabilities. It finds application in building energy management and assisted living. The research has informed and led to numerous collaborative research initiatives (total value of £12M with a Cardiff share of £1.7M), including four EU FP7 projects (KnowholEM-285229, SPORTE-260124, RESILIENT-314671, PERFORMER-609154) in the field of building energy management and a BRE funded initiative (TP-FC01 Estate Energy Optimization) with a view of delivering an energy consultancy service. Energy savings of up to 30% have been demonstrated with a large scale replication potential.
