Additional information

This paper demonstrates the potential of phytoremediation of boron contaminated soils by explaining the uptake mechanisms, accumulation and distribution of boron in plants. For the first time, non-destructive imaging (neutron radiography) was used to study the distribution of boron in leaves. This work was the result of an international collaboration with Swiss (ETH, WSL) and New Zealand (Lincoln) universities. The study has major significance in managing boron contaminated soils, particularly irrigation of agricultural fields with B-laden water, coal mining, or fly ash deposition onto agricultural land.
