The paper both presents a new method of assessing the performance of pollution clean-up techniques and evaluates a complex field experiment in which biodegradation of a zone of non-aqueous trichloroethene was enhanced by various additives. The rigorous analysis demonstrated that this clean-up experiment could not be proven to have worked and that better controlled and monitored experiments would be needed in the field in future. The referees commented: "this is a paper that will have an eager audience" and "the techniques ... will make significant contributions to the evaluation of in-situ bioremediation performance".
