Estelle Thompson: solo exhibition. October - November 2009
This was a solo exhibition of paintings produced in the period 2006-2009. This exhibition consisted of 18 oil paintings on panel and aluminium and a desk, designed and fabricated in collaboration with Gary Woodley. The paintings continued ongoing investigation of materials, including the use of metal supports and of metal pigment suspended in wax. Research concerns related to colour and compositional formats in the evolution of abstraction. The paintings experimented with various transparent glazes, media, application, and specific pigment and oil paint qualities. This material investigation was to achieve greater luminosity and to explore a range of colour theories. These paintings also address issues of the formal field in painting. The collaborative desk project followed on from a commission to design a Meet and Greet desk for Hull Teaching PCT, LIFT Arts and Health Programme-Orchard Park, Hull. Research imperatives addressed fundamental design; Fine Art principles; the practical concerns of furniture design and manufacture with aesthetic principles, in the context of the legacy of the Bauhaus. The collaborative process was integral to the research process and final product.
