The rigorous computational analysis represents the first publication of the quantified impact of friction stir welding on the static strength of large scale aircraft panel structure. The findings have led to further industrial collaboration, developing friction stir welding for wing panel assembly (Ken Poston, Head of Advanced Metallics: Strategic Technologies, Bombardier Aerospace).
