Additional information

This paper describes the first demonstration of laser ablation of polymer PMMA for microfluidic systems such as lab-on-a-chip used in biomedical applications. The work was funded under the £1.5M IeRMC flagship project Smart microsystems (FS/01/02/10). It also describes the first demonstration of autonomous, laser ablated, PMMA-based stop-and-go valves based on purely geometrical effects.
