Additional information

Artificial intelligence, in the form of planning algorithms, is applied in this work to overcome the significant issues surrounding the length of time required to calibrate machine tools. In this work, the target was to reduce machine downtime by solving the non-trivial planning problem of over forty measurements. The work is essentially a demonstration of implementation/impact of previous work EPSRC(EP/I033424/1) and EU-funded FP7 projects, SOMMACT: NMP-SL-2009-229112 and HARCO:NMP2-SL-2010. The results have impacted in increasing the uptake of machine tool calibration at research partners. This reduction in downtime has already led to an increase in the number of calibrations being undertaken.
