Additional information

This paper proposed a novel approach for combining different fingerprint matching criteria. Its major significance has been that it has given rise to patented (GB 06 13482.9, PCT/GB2007/002471) techniques for deriving encryption keys directly from fingerprint samples. This technology is highly commercially viable and is currently being exploited via a spin-out company, Metrarc Ltd, of the University of Kent which itself has received commercialisation funding from the Technology Strategy Board (awards 19882-146191, 24247-170184, 27266-192226) and regional development agencies. A key novelty of this work is the use of a heuristic search technique to optimise the function used for this combination.
