Museums and Community. Ideas, issues and challenges
The book was published in 2008 but carries a 2007 imprint. It was not entered in RAE2008 because it appeared in January 2008. We have a letter from the publisher, Routledge, confirming the publication year of 2008.
The interdisciplinary nature of the subject of this book made engagement with a considerable body of literature essential to its core purpose. It evaluates and critiques debates in museum and heritage studies, museum practice, community studies, community development and public policy. The themes covered included symbolising identity through museums, social capital, cultural diversity, community relations and community movements. Examples of practice were considered in Northern Ireland, South Africa and the United States. Evaluating such a range of material involved a significant period of research time. Drawing together this extensive range of sources was very complex and lead to an in-depth understanding of the complexity of the museum-community connection.
