Dielectrowetting Driven Spreading of Droplets
Establishes a completely new method of actively controlling the shape of a liquid droplet using a voltage by dielectrophoretic forces. This is an alternative to control using electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) which is used in liquid-based optics and droplet-based Lab-on-a-Chip applications/microfluidics. Resulted in an invited oral presentation at SPIE/COS Photonics Asia (PA107, Beijing, 2012). It was the basis of the subsequent award of EPSRC grant "Dielectrowetting: Controlling Oleo- and Hydrophilicity and Shaping Liquid Surfaces" (EP/K014803/1 and EP/K015192/1; ranked no. 1 at panel) supported by Dolomite Ltd, L-3 TRL Technol. Ltd, Merck Chemicals for which McHale is overall PI.
