Highly Efficient Separation of Actinides from Lanthanides by a Phenanthroline-Derived Bis-triazine Ligand
Pre-organization is known to improve the metal-binding properties of organic ligands, an idea conceived and synthesized by Lewis. This study applies this principle to ligands that separate actinides from lanthanides in nuclear waste reprocessing. This paper results from collaborations (UK, Germany, Belgium and France) within the EU FP7-funded (FP7-CP-2007-211267) project 'ACSEPT' on actinide partitioning (www.acsept.org). The paper attracted much attention, leading to a news article in Chemistry World (August 2011) and an invited lecture at the ATALANTE Conference in Montpellier (September 2012). The work was patented and commercialized (WO2011077081A1), and the ligand is now available commercially from Technocomm (www.technocomm.co.uk).
