Additional information

This paper shows for the first time how modelling of particle dynamics using a discrete element (DE) approach can provide greater understanding and optimisation of the shot peening process to provide maximum strength benefit to engineering components. Combining the DE method, which gives understanding of particle interactions in the incoming shot stream combined with rebounding particles, with FE analysis of the resulting surface impacts is shown to be a powerful approach to understanding how shot peening process parameters can affect resulting residual stress generation in critical components.
