Additional information

The work expands the range of practical applications of evolutionary computing. The work was funded by the European Office of Aerospace Research & Development (EOARD). It established that hitherto unknown computational functions could be evolved in liquid crystal. The ideas have formed the foundation of an EU (ICT 317662) funded research project, NASCENCE: Nanoscale engineering for novel computation using evolution, in Unconventional Computation.
