Additional information

This paper examines accelerated technological change as one of the forces evoking ‘cultural nostalgia’ and records how designers are creatively addressing it. The research draws on an extensive literature review combined with interview-based case study methods applied to design practice. The paper builds on previous publications and research into design and nostalgia conducted by the authors, which cross-compare Chinese and western experiences. The authors are currently participating in an international interdisciplinary network of research into nostalgia and have supported two related seminars at Aalto University, Helsinki. The research is unique in formally investigating design and nostalgia across differing cultural contexts.
