Georgio Scala and the Moorish Slaves. The Inquisition - Malta 1598
Agius brought together the international multidisciplinary team for the project of which this volume is a primary output. He directed and organized the workshops at which the research was discussed and the conclusions formulated. He directed the composition and structure of each chapter, through a collaborative process with the individual authors. Agius worked with the individual collaborators, across the three languages used in the volume, and focusing the project to reach specific conclusions. He edited the whole volume, and co-authored two chapters, made significant contributions to a third, authored the introduction and conclusion and constructed the appendices.
Whereas previous scholarship used inquisition documents peripherally, Agius presents one document in its entirety, approaching the work through the assembly of a multi-disciplinary team, holding workshops and extensive consultations, and producing joint-authored elements of the final text of the work. This required extensive research individual research activity by Agius. Working with texts in Latin, Italian and Arabic, Agius, as director and on his own at first, moved the project into a collaborative phase, directing fellow researchers. Agius also instigated the extensive data collection and consultation of other archives to triangulate findings, addressing the palaeographical and semantic issues of the text.
