This paper presents an interactive sound design and interactive composition aesthetic. It reports on and analyses the outcomes of three projects designed by the authors that blended together elements of interactive performance, sound installation and architectural design in order to deliver a sonic result in which the audience plays a central role. Audience members were able to interact directly with the artworks, and as a result become part of the installation, underlining the importance of audience involvement in the performance process.

The authors were invited to submit their work for a special issue of ‘Organised Sound’, an international, peer-reviewed journal on the use of technology in music, which focussed on Audience Participation.

The aesthetic suggested by the authors is explored theoretically and practically, offering a novel perspective that is currently lacking from the field of sonic arts and computer music. The peer reviewers emphasized the significance of the approach: “I find that the processes described in the presentation of the works goes right to the heart of the most important issues today in the construction of sonic works that have an audience interactive component.”
