Development of multiple frequency electromagnetic induction systems for steel flow visualization.
The EMT (electromagnetic tomography) system presented in this paper is the first multiple-frequency system developed for metal processes. The uniqueness of this new EMT system is that it uses a removable sensor head for practical deployment and enables the inductive coils to be operated simultaneously. The work was a collaboration with Corus and has resulted in a prototype instrumentation system for efficient steel flow visualization (stuart.higson@corusgroup.com). It has precipitated patent filings (e.g., EP2548012A2 and GB2459790A) and has also led to an EPSRC-funded project (DT/F002467) to develop next generation electromagnetic walk-by body scanners working with Rapiscan Systems and Manchester Airport.
