Additional information

Globally, the vast majority of electricity used in manufacturing industry is by induction machines. Any small reduction in losses can therefore have global impact. This work is the first to investigate the correlation of key sinusoidal and pulse width modulation losses in supplies. It concludes that induction motors need to be designed differently for the two common supplies, though this adds capital costs, is offset by significantly lower running costs and carbon footprint. This work, in collaboration with Nottingham, is one of the key papers which led to EPSRC grants (EP/K008552 £367,225, proposed EP/L019132 £1.25M) to take the work further.
