Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, Books 1-6, translated with introduction and commentary
Marcus Aurelius: Meditations 1-6 (Oxford University Press, 2013), translated with introduction and commentary, Clarendon Later Ancient Philosophers, lxxxiv +221. This book, finalised with a one-year AHRC fellowship, draws on many years’ research on Stoicism, and combines three separate strands. The translation depends both on a fresh reading of the work and an independent selection between currently available Greek texts. The introduction (over 80 pages) offers a new analysis of the philosophical content of the Meditations. The book offers the first extended commentary since 1944 and pioneers a new mode of interpretative reading for the Meditations.
