Enhancement of a virtual reality wheelchair simulator to include qualitative and quantitative performance metrics
This paper follows on from the work published in the MIT journal “Presence” funded by EPSRC (EQUAL) to improve Analysis of access compliance. Its worldwide originality is based on the unique use of realistic motor torque to provide slope accelerations in a Virtual Reality environment rather than brake dragger sensations on a PC screen, This work integrated both immersive graphics CAVE and wheelchair use. Its significance is that this peer reviewed publication was by special invitation via a conference invitation via leading author/wheelchair racer R.A. Cooper. Details on the system for product development were later requested by an MIT spinout company, HStar Technologies.
